Let me start off by saying that it has been a very, very long time since I donned a pair of roller skates. The last time I remember skating had to be about 17 years ago. My son (Boo) has been begging me for months to take him, and somehow, I always found something better to distract him. Not this time, though. Why not? Well, this event was free, as my employer sponsored it. Can’t beat that.
Since this was also a costume contest, I dressed up as an 80’s girl with heavy blue eyeshadow and petticoat skirt. Boo was completely taken aback when he saw me, as I kept the event a surprise. His first reaction? “Uhh…MOM?? What happened to your FACE? It’s freaking me out!” Then he closed and locked his door. I guess I know what to do next time I want some alone time.
I finished getting ready and then told him to put on his taekwondo uniform. He was confused and kept asking questions, so I eventually told him we were going to a costume contest. He griped, “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? AHHH!” as he rushed around trying to get into his uniform.
The contest was at a local skating rink on the other side of town. Boo kept complaining about how far away the destination was. “Wow, this is really far away! Are we there yet? How about now?” He actually had no idea where we were going this time, and he was completely surprised when we pulled into the skating rink. He practically leapt out of the car and bounded to the door. Thankfully, we were the first ones there, so there was no one to witness me faceplanting onto the hard floor. Seriously, I was terrified the whole time that I would fall and crack my head open or break both knees. As I bravely rolled (well, wobbled) out onto the rink, I was rather embarrassed, because it was not the most graceful presentation. After a couple of laps I was completely exhausted, but it got easier over time. It’s not exactly like riding a bike, so I could definitely use more practice. Overall, I was quite pleased with my ~10 lap record.
We had a great time and I managed to win the prize for best adult costume. Best of all, I didn’t fall!
